Minneapolis has its own case of the crips vs bloods but it is better known as 5-8 Club vs Matt's Bar. Both claim to serve the original Juicy Lucy.

Now I don't want to pick sides because I've only eaten at one of the local hamburger joints, so before telling you my thoughts I will fill you in with some facts.

5-8 Club:
-Spelled "Juicy Lucy"
-$4.99
-Serving the almighty burger since 1928
-Choice of four different cheese
-Fancier atmosphere and website



Matt's Bar:
-Spelled "Jucy Lucy"- claiming they are the first because they first thought of it and incorrectly spelled it when trying to market the burger
-$4.95
-Serving the burger for a long time, but date not noted on website
-Only stuffed with the "original" American cheese
-Looks like a dump and website is that of a beginner web design student



It's tough to say who serves THE original juicy/jucy lucy, but here is my hypothesis thus far:
Matt's thought of the idea first because their minds were so exhausted from coming up with the beautiful beef masterpiece, that they didn't consider offering other cheese options and just stuck with American. Also, their lack of ambiance actually works for them because I think it shows their confidence in their originality and food that they do not need the hype of appearance and a website. Also, they spelled it wrong. They were so thrilled about it that they wanted to share it with the world and didn't spell check. Oops.

But then there is 5-8 - Why the fancy, trendy paint? Why the marketing through a nice website? Well, maybe they did think of the original idea and just decided to keep the place pretty and grammatically correct? Maybe they were geniuses?

I will never know...for now anyway. Maybe once we try Matt's Bar we'll have a better conclusion. What do you think?
